Another Successful Week!
It`s great to finish off another successful but busy week. Travelling back and forth between Hamilton and Ottawa, I have had the chance to hear a lot about the issues Hamiltonians want me to fight for in Ottawa, and have had the chance to make their voice heard in our Capital.
It`s never a dull moment at the arrival of the CP Holiday Train in Hamilton. It was truly an honour to be able to speak at the event and ride in the train. It was awesome to see such amazing generosity on the part of Hamiltonians who donated in support of the Hamilton Food Share.
The Hamilton Food Share is always looking for donations to help those in our city in need. For more information on how to donate, check out http://www.hamiltonfoodshare.org/how-you-can-help/.
Almost 600,000 New Jobs!
According to the most recent data, Canadians have created almost 600,000 jobs since we were elected. With 80,000 jobs being created in November alone, Canada`s unemployment rate now sits as its lowest level in almost a decade (5.9%).
Specifically, to help jobs for young people, on Monday our government announced the creation of 10,000 paid internships per year for Canadian students and recent graduates through Mitacs, a national, not-for-profit organization that designs and delivers research and training internships in Canada.
A Formal Apology to LGTBQ2 Canadians
The Prime Minister delivered a formal apology in the House of Commons to individuals harmed by federal legislation, policies and practices that led to the oppression of and discrimination against LGBTQ2 people in Canada.
We also introduced Bill C-66, the Expungement of Historically Unjust Convictions Act. This new legislation will put into place a process to permanently destroy the records of convictions for offences involving consensual sexual activity between same-sex partners that would be lawful today.
Fighting for Canadians’ Right to Retire in Dignity!
Each year, fewer and fewer Canadians have workplace pensions to fall back on. To address this, we made a commitment to Canadians to strengthen the Canada Pension Plan in order to help them achieve their goal of a strong, secure, and stable retirement. Last year, Canada’s Finance Ministers reached an historic agreement in to make meaningful changes to the CPP. The deal will boost how much each Canadian will get from their pension – from one quarter of their earnings now, to fully one third.
Every Canadian deserves a secure and dignified retirement after a lifetime of hard work. Through this enhancement, we have taken a powerful step to help make that happen.
