I hope that everyone has transitioned from the holidays into the New Year successfully. There is a big year ahead of us and I am looking forward to seeing all that it will bring for Hamilton East – Stoney Creek.

As we enter 2019, what should our government’s focus be for the year ahead? (Please note that all responses will remain entirely anonymous).

A. Economy and Jobs
B. Seniors and Pensions
C. Environment and Climate Change
D. Foreign Affairs
E. Supporting Our Veterans
F. Pharmacare
G. Reconciliation with Indigenous Canadians
H. Equality

Thank you for sharing your insight with me!

Congratulations to Orchard Park Secondary School!

This Wednesday I had a chance to join the Orchard Park Secondary School band during their early morning practice before class. This amazing group of talented musicians won Best High School Instrumental in the CBC Canadian Music Class Challenge.

A Reduced Small Business Tax!

Our government kicked off the New Year by lowering the small business tax rate from 11 to 9% to help small business save, grow, and innovate. Canada’s small business tax rate is now the lowest in the G7.

Since we took office, Canadians have created over 800,000 new jobs and significantly increased the number of full-time jobs. Unemployment is now at an historic low, with Hamilton’s unemployment rate being one of the lowest in the G7.

Investing in Child Care

As the cost of living increases, Canadian families need more support. To assist Canadian families, our government will be making historic investments in child care, providing places for the number of children equivalent to double the number of seats at Tim Hortons’ Field.

On Wednesday this week, I had the opportunity to join the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development, in Hamilton to make this important announcement.

Preparing to Return to Parliament

Members of Parliament will return to Ottawa this month where MPs like myself will have the chance to share the feedback we’ve heard from our constituents with our colleagues. I look forward to sharing much of your concerns and feedback with my colleagues in Ottawa.

When MPs return to take their seats at Parliament, we will not be sitting in the traditional House of Commons. Parliament’s Centre Block will be closed for the next decade due to renovations. Instead, we will be taking our seats in a makeshift House of Commons set up in a courtyard in Parliament’s West Block featured below.

Reminder for Employers: Apply for the Canada Summer Jobs Program

The application period for employers to apply for funding through the Canada Summer Jobs Program is open until January 25, 2018! That’s only 2 weeks away!

The Canada Summer Jobs Program provides quality summer work experience to young Canadians between the ages of 15 and 30 by providing wage subsidies to not-for-profit and public-sector employees, as well as to small businesses. This year our government expanded the eligibility to include all youth aged 15-30, no longer just students. This change has been made to complement the Government’s renewal of the Youth Employment Strategy, announced in Budget 2018.

In 2018, our government provided nearly $600,000 to businesses in Hamilton East – Stoney Creek to support Hamilton East – Stoney Creek’s local economy.

If you have any questions regarding applying for the program, don’t hesitate to contact me.  For more information, you can click here. I look forward to supporting your application.
